Can I cut out a stud in order to place an outlet box in the same space?

I need to move an outlet box over a few inches so that it's placement will be centered between two mirrors in a bathroom that we're remodeling. Unfortunately, there's a stud in the exact place I want. Can I cut out that part of the stud and put the outlet box there?

You can try using a shallow electrical box that does not require you to cut the stud completely, only to the depth of the box; or you can cut the stud, install the box and nail 2x4 supports on either side of the box to the upper and lower ends of the stud that was cut. That should keep it from moving.
